Q: How does it feel to win the first Bundesliga championship?
Tuhull: I have to say, this makes me relieved. I felt that we gave the Bundesliga champion to our opponents in the last home match against Leipzig. We regained the championship with the help of luck and Mainz. At that moment, we felt very good, because this is such a tense and unexpected thing. Of course, this is much ahead of you before the end of the season, and the situation is clear and can bring more mood swings. However, in general, this is not what we expect from ourselves. We are not stable enough to show enough energy. We cannot convey the energy on the court to the fans. We need to improve, reach our standards and make ourselves happy. This is what we need to do.
Q: What did you tell them when you gathered the team in the preseason? What kind of culture and structure do you want the team to build?
Tuhull: In my opinion, the structure of the team always follows the characteristics and abilities of the players and the combination of the teams. It is a bit strange to enter a new season in April. More importantly, considering that this team is more or less competing for the championship, the timing of my entry into the lead is somewhat strange. Now we have an advantage that we know more about the players. So we know what we want to do. After the training began, we emphasized the principles in each training and followed the clear development path, automaticity, football style and principles. This is what we follow, because this is what we need at present. What can bring us stability, what should not be done, where can we do better, etc. So this is our situation.
Q: What do you want to see from your team when your team walks on the court? Which kind of football do you want to see? Which kind of football do you support?
Tuhull: In general, I hope we can play faster, have higher overall mobility, have smoother attacks, bring the game to the half of the opponent, and take the initiative, keep opponents away from our half-time. We want to implement a positive style. We want to take risks in attacking the third zone, but we also need to maintain a stable and dominant position in the midfield and defense line. In short, we want to create as many opportunities as possible and defend all members so as not to allow opponents to get opportunities. If it’s just a possession, it’s nothing. In my opinion, we still lack a spirit, a spirit that everyone on the court can feel. This team is fighting for each other. They will overcome obstacles and difficulties in the competition together. This is the spirit we lack. We must become stronger and prepare for difficult times. We have a lot of things to do.
Q: You have put forward some clear requirements for the board of directors, such as side guards, central defenders, point midfield and number 9. What is the idea behind this?
Tuhull: The central defender came more or less. I am very glad that Jin juzai made the decision to come here, because it was beyond our expectation. We made a plan with Luca Hernandez. He wanted to leave here after the season was over. He received an offer, so we will see if we can find a replacement to make up for his loss at this point. I think we found it.
This is not my plan, nor the request made by the board of directors. It is more my summary of last season. I gave my own opinion, and then we reduced the candidates, because in my opinion, too many candidates are meaningless, so we narrowed down the selection range. This is sometimes difficult to do, because you have to make some difficult decisions in the process. However, once we do this, we will choose the most suitable person within the candidate range. As I said, we must become stronger and harder in the competition, so this is more or less the focus of our attention.
Q: except for the transfer operation, you seem to prefer the four defenders. Will three defenders be your choice?
Tuhull: this possibility is never ruled out. There are many offensive players in our team, which makes it difficult for them to fight for their position, which is not good. I think we should have four offensive players on the court, even five. In Chelsea, I used three defenders, plus side guards and double midfield. We have too many players. We all have suitable players in terms of three defenders and side defenders. Therefore, if necessary, I will never rule out the possibility of using the three-guard formation, but at present we plan to use the four-guard formation.
Q: How did you feel on the first day with Jin Yunzai? How does he look? What do you expect from him?
Tuhull: I love him. He is so calm and straightforward, including his expression, consciousness and competition ability. His passing was never fancy. The first time he touched the ball was the control ball, and the second time he touched the ball was the ball. His speed is also appropriate, not too hard, not too slow, not flashy. This is great, because you want to get it from an experienced player.
His defense is very brave and fast. He is always helping others and always looking for places where he can help. Then he can kick our left central defender or right central defender.
